My British professor put this up on the screen in class today. He said that in America, people actually declined having tea when they “popped by his house.” In England, (he said), you go through this whole procedure, if you will, when you pop by someone’s house.
Step One: Why hello there, would you like to come in?
Step Two: Discuss about the weather
Step Three: Would you like some tea?
Step Four: Actual conversation begins.
Then when Professor Smith came to the States, he realized that people actually said no when he offered them tea.
Professor Smith said that when “the Americans” declined his offer of tea, he was at a lost as to what to do next: “How on earth do I start a conversation if there’s no tea?!”
Oh the Brits. Always a fun bunch.
